An Encounter at the Shrine with Jon Batiste

There are nights that feel like dreams—like your spirit left your body to watch from the rafters. That’s exactly what it felt like at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, where we came face to face with music legend Jon Batiste.

Yes, that Jon Batiste! The Grammy-winning, Oscar-holding, jazz-singing, soul-playing genius was in town, filming a documentary and performing live. Thanks to our dear friend and Afrobeat maestro Made Kuti, we were invited to witness it all.

As performers, we’ve admired Jon for years—not just for his musical brilliance, but for his courage. His sound is joy. His story is resistance. And seeing him on stage at the Shrine, weaving jazz into the pulse of Afrobeat with Made, was truly unforgettable.

During a short break in the shoot, we talked to Jon Batiste about music, spirit and purpose. He listened as much as he shared. It felt like reconnecting with a kindred spirit—someone who understands that music is ministry.

While quietly playing on the sidelines during the second soundcheck, Jon Batiste and Made Kuti, inched closer and played with us, right there on the Shrine stage—a stage that has carried the voices of generations of musicians.

It was an extraordinary encounter. A reminder from the universe that we’re walking a path paved by those who came before us, guided by sound and purpose.

Thank you, Jon.
Thank you, Made.
Thank you, Shrine.

Love,
