ISEDA is a monthly cultural experience celebrating literature, music, art, and film, hosted by OUIDA in partnership with the United States Consulate, drawing a diverse audience from the creative community and beyond. We were really excited when we were invited to be the guest artists at ISEDA 2.0 on 27 February.
The event began with a thought-provoking panel discussion, moderated by renowned author and festival curator, Lola Shoneyin. The conversation was centered on the role of music and creative expression in shaping society, with members of The Recurrence—Tobi Onanaye, Emmanuel Eze, and Kehinde Odunuga—offering personal insights into the band’s philosophy and mission.
Tobi:
“If one should desire to know whether a kingdom is well governed, if its morals are good or bad, the quality of its music will furnish the answer”. This statement was made by Confucius over 2,000 years ago—before TikTok was a thing. Imagine the power we now hold as artists.”
Emmanuel:
“From Socrates to Da Vinci, Nina Simone to Fela, art has always been a tool to shape society. We’re not in this for fame—we’re here to revive a tradition where music educates just as much as it entertains.”
Kehinde:
“Our message isn’t class-based. It’s not for just one group—it’s for everyone. Music by The Recurrence is written to echo through every level of society.”
In closing, Lola Shoneyin noted:
“I love having conversations with The Recurrence. It’s refreshing to speak with young musicians who are not only smart but genuinely interesting.”
The second half of the evening featured a live performance, showcasing our original compositions to an audience comprising family, friends and the OUIDA community. Notable figures like; Seun Anikulapo-Kuti, Michel Deelen, Sola Mogaji “Schullzz” and ‘Ms Bo’ were present in the audience, giving us love and support.
Love,
The Recurrence
